Seasonal staffing in Michigan, planned before the rush

Seasonal staffing for Michigan warehouses and plants begins weeks before the crunch: RHO Hiring determines head count, shifts and start dates with you, recruits and trains the workers, then scales your crew up and down with your volume. Give us a call at (248) 843-0000 before the holidays, harvest time or product launch.

How does seasonal staffing work in Michigan?

Seasonal staffing begins with a predictable busy season and most Michigan operations have one. Distribution and fulfillment centers see the holiday rush from fall through December. Food plants push hard during harvest and holiday seasons. Cannabis facilities hire for harvest and trim. Manufacturers and automotive suppliers gear up for launches and new contracts. We all know the busy season is coming, but can you have prepared staff on the floor the week it begins?

RHO Hiring creates recurring staffing plans for those peaks. Weeks in advance, we sit down with you to review last year's peak, look at the forecast and plan the shifts: how many people, what jobs, starting when and on which shifts. Then we recruit and screen in advance, train workers on safety protocols before day one and orient them to your site, so the first day of the peak season isn't the first day someone walks into that building.

When volume is at its peak, you have a dedicated management team that stays on your account. We verify attendance for every shift, handle call-offs and increase or decrease head count as needed (up when orders are booming, down when they slack off). When the season winds down, the assignments come to an end. High-performing workers can either be rehired for next season, or transitioned to temp-to-hire if you choose to keep them.

The season ends and we review it with you: shifts filled, attendance, overtime and what to do differently next time. That review forms the baseline of next year's plan. Our walkthrough of planning for peak season staffing covers what to do for Q4 and every other crunch.

  • Planned, not rushed

We plan head count, shifts and start dates with you prior to the peak. We scale up and down with your volume.

  • Plans that repeat

These are plans that will return every season. They are built on what worked and what didn't last time.

What does a seasonal staffing plan include?

  • A forecast, built with you

Labor requirements by week, by shift and job based on your volume forecast and historical data from the previous season.

  • Early recruiting

Recruitment and screening take place before the peak arrives so you have workers ready to go when needed.

  • Safety and site preparation

Employees get safety training before beginning and instructions on your rules and pace.

  • Ramp-up in stages

Staffing is phased in with increases in volume, so you're not bringing all of your staff in on the same morning to train.

  • Shift coverage

Days, nights, weekends and high-volume shifts covered as outlined in the plan.

  • Adjustments during the peak

Head count ramps up and down with your volume, and call-offs are filled as soon as the appropriate person is identified.

  • Ramp-down

Assignments ramp down in line with your volume, without layoffs on your end.

  • A season review

Fill rate, attendance and overtime throughout the season, with notes to include on next year's plan.

Peak staffing options

Mix them as your floor needs. Your manager sets it up with you.

  1. 1Holiday and year-end peaks

Additional pickers, packers, and loaders needed to handle retail and e-commerce volume in the fall and winter.

  2. 2Harvest and production cycles

Trimmers, packers and line workers for harvests, food production runs and other work that repeats in cycles.

  3. 3Launches and new contracts

Additional assembly, handling and inspection help while a new program ramps up.

  4. 4Recurring plans

Use the same plan every year, modified according to your new forecast, and bring back familiar workers when they become available.

When do you need a peak staffing plan?

  • Every peak starts with a scramble for people
  • Overtime spikes for weeks during your busy season
  • Seasonal hires arrive after the volume does
  • Orders ship late during your busiest weeks
  • Supervisors spend the peak training instead of running the floor

Seasonal staffing questions

Don’t see yours? Call 248-843-0000 and a manager will answer it.

How far ahead should we plan for a peak?

The sooner, the better. Particularly if you have a big head count or night shifts. As soon as you know your forecast, give us a call. We will have a manager get back to you, typically within a couple of hours, and we plan backward from your start date.

How is seasonal staffing priced?

Hourly, like any other temporary staffing. Charges depend upon the positions, shifts worked, overtime and number of employees. Having a plan with defined volume and dates makes it easier to price, and you get your quote prior to the season beginning.

Can we change the head count during the season?

Yes. Inform your manager as volume dictates and we will increase or decrease the number of employees per shift. The more notice you can give us the easier it is to fill increases.

Who employs and pays seasonal workers?

RHO does. Seasonals are RHO employees assigned to work at your location. We pay them, withhold payroll taxes and file the paperwork. When the season ends, their assignment ends. There is no layoff required on your part.

Can we keep some seasonal workers after the peak?

Yes. Successful workers have the option to continue as temporary workers, convert to temp-to-hire or be placed on your payroll, as outlined in your agreement with RHO.

What if a seasonal worker doesn't work out?

Inform your manager. There's no time to waste when you're in a peak, so we hustle to find a replacement and learn from what went wrong for the next match.
