Night and weekend shift staffing for Michigan warehouses and plants

If you're short again on second shift, shift staffing from RHO Hiring fills first, second and third shift, weekends and high-volume days at Michigan distribution centers and manufacturing facilities. We recruit employees to work those specific shifts. Call (248) 843-0000 and someone in management will call you back, typically within a couple of hours.

Why are night and weekend shifts harder to staff?

Facilities can generally staff first shift easily enough. After sunset and on weekends, however, problems occur: second shift staff leave for day jobs, third shift is covered by overtime and the Saturday staff is whoever said they'd show up. These shifts also tend to handle the highest volume, with evening truck deliveries and overnight picks to ship in the morning.

RHO Hiring fills day, night, weekend and high-volume shifts at warehouses, factories and production floors throughout Michigan. The difference starts with our recruiting: we seek out individuals who have schedules that will work with the hours you need and who are seeking those hours. Someone who wants the shift you have is much more likely to stay on that shift than someone who took it as a placeholder while waiting for a day shift.

Prior to the first shift, workers are screened for reliability, trained on safety protocols and informed about what your night (or weekend) shift will entail: starting time, breaks, who is in charge and how to contact RHO. When someone calls off, that call is routed to RHO and we begin looking for cover as soon as we receive the call. A dedicated management team stays on your account and your manager will follow up with you, typically within a couple of hours.

Shift patterns come in all types, and we staff them as they come: 8-hour first, second and third, 10-hour and 12-hour, weekend crews and the extra shifts a peak will throw at you. We also cover the high-volume days that run heavy every week, such as receiving days, ship days and month-end. For more on shifts, peak season and safety, read our warehouse staffing guide.

  • Recruited for the hours

We hire individuals seeking night or weekend work, so they stay on the shift rather than waiting to get off it.

  • Coverage that follows the clock

Call-offs from any shift go to RHO, and we begin coverage as soon as we're notified.

Which shifts can RHO staff?

  • First shift

Day crews are filled for production, receiving, picking and packing so the other shifts do not have to borrow from day.

  • Second shift

Afternoon and evening crews, the shift that often loses people to day jobs. That's the shift we make a point to recruit for.

  • Third shift

Production, picking and loading crews for overnight, drawn from people who'd rather work nights.

  • Weekend crews

Saturday and Sunday work hours, regular weekend schedules and weekend overtime coverage.

  • Long shifts

10- and 12-hour days and compressed weeks, staffed by employees who understand what those days mean.

  • High-volume days

Additional help on the days you know will always run heavy: receiving days, ship days and month-end.

  • Call-off cover

If a person calls off, RHO will begin on a replacement as soon as we're notified.

  • Shift briefings

Workers are informed of start time, breaks and who they need to report to so there are no gaps when shift changes occur.

Ways to staff your shifts

Mix them as your floor needs. Your manager sets it up with you.

  2. 2Overtime relief

  3. 3Peak-only shifts

Temporarily adding a second or third shift for a busy season or a new contract.

  4. 4Temp-to-hire on hard shifts

Employees who begin as temps and transition to your payroll after proving they will consistently work nights or weekends.

Signs your shifts need help

  • Second or third shift is short most nights
  • The same people work every weekend on overtime
  • Night-shift hires quit within weeks
  • Call-offs after hours leave you with no one to call
  • Day shift starts by catching up on what nights couldn't finish

Shift staffing questions

Don’t see yours? Call 248-843-0000 and a manager will answer it.

Do night and weekend workers cost more?

Frequently, yes. Lots of employers pay more for nights and weekends, and the worker's pay comes out of the bill rate. Overtime hours are higher as well. We quote each shift individually. That way you see the difference before anyone starts.

How fast can you staff a shift?

It really depends on the position, number of openings and shift worked. A manager will usually get back to you within a couple of hours to take your order. General labor usually fills quicker than skilled positions, and nights can be slower for skilled positions. We provide you with an estimated start date and notify you as soon as possible if something comes up.

What happens when a worker calls off at night?

Employees notify RHO and your supervisor when they call off and we begin working on a cover immediately. If you have a large crew, we may be able to build additional coverage into the shifts that are most affected by call-offs.

Who handles payroll for shift workers?

RHO. Assigned workers are RHO staff: we pay them for every shift (overtime included), withhold payroll taxes and deal with the paperwork. Your supervisors approve their hours.

Can we hire night-shift workers permanently?

Yes. Temp-to-hire staffing arrangements work very well when hiring for hard shifts. That's because you find out who will stick around for nights before you hire them. The terms for moving a worker to your payroll are in your agreement with RHO.

Can you staff a shift we're just adding?

Yes. Opening a new second or third shift is a common reason to call. We work with you on head count and start dates for the new shift, and recruit to fill the new hours before the shift starts.
