Warehouse and distribution center staffing in Michigan

Michigan distribution center staffing by RHO Hiring places order pickers, packers, forklift operators and loading crews on your floor, matched to your facility and prepared for it before the first shift. We staff day shift, night shift and weekend shift employees. When you call (248) 843-0000, a manager will return your call, usually within a couple of hours.

What does a distribution center need from a staffing agency?

A distribution center can't afford to operate with an empty station on any shift. Someone else sets its clock: the carrier's pickup window, the customer's order cutoff time or the inbound trailer backing into the dock at 6 a.m. Receivers unload and check in freight, drivers put it away, pickers pull orders, packers build cartons and loaders stage and load outbound trailers. If one station doesn't have enough bodies to operate efficiently, everything behind it backs up.

Warehouse hiring is about more than finding bodies to show up and work. The work itself is hard and monotonous. Shifts are long and accuracy is as important as speed. One missed pick becomes a return or chargeback. RHO screens candidates for dependability and attention to detail, then prepares them for the specific warehouse they'll be working in, so they know before day one what they're doing, what to wear and how your facility operates.

Before we send anyone, we get to know your facility: the flow, the equipment, your shifts and daily volume, and how much that volume varies by day of the week or season to season. This helps us understand how many employees you need per shift, which positions require forklift experience, and where a core team of employees is critical.

Metro Detroit warehouses are located near the airport in western Wayne County, on I-75 and M-59 in Oakland and Macomb counties and in industrial parks throughout the area. We service them from our Southfield office and can staff facilities across Michigan. Learn more about positions, shifts, peak season and safety in our warehouse staffing guide.

What makes warehouse hiring hard?

  • Volume that swings week to week

A Monday after a holiday, a large customer's promotion or an inbound load that arrives late can double a shift's work. Staffing levels must be fluid up and down without starting from scratch every time.

  • Turnover in the first weeks

Warehouses lose the most people early on. Usually it's because the job isn't what the new hire thought it would be. Get expectations right before day one and you'll retain more.

  • Accuracy at speed

Pick rates are important, but scans, counts and labels are important too. Employees must adhere to the inventory process even when the floor is hectic.

  • Night and weekend coverage

The second shift, third shift and weekends are the hardest shifts to fill and the first to fall apart when someone calls off.

Bring in a picker or forklift operator on a temp assignment you can convert to a hire after they prove themselves on your floor.

  • Seasonal and peak staffing

Recurring staffing schedules for your busy periods, based on last year's volume, so you have that additional crew scheduled before the rush starts.

First, second and third shift workers, weekend and busy-day help, and fill-ins when someone calls out.

  • Forklift operators

Experienced forklift operators, matched to your trucks, for receiving, putaway, replenishment and loading.

Distribution center staffing questions

How quickly can you get workers to our warehouse?

Typically, a manager will respond to you within a couple of hours of your call or request. Time until workers begin varies based on staffing needs, position and shift. Simply let us know your desired start date and we'll be honest with you about availability.

Do you supply forklift operators for warehouse work?

Yes. We pair operators with the equipment your facility runs, whether that's sit-down counterbalance trucks, stand-up reach trucks or order pickers. Most host sites provide the site-specific training and assessment of each operator on its own trucks before they drive there, as discussed in our guide to forklift operator training under OSHA, and we build the first day around that.

Can you cover second shift and weekends?

Yes. We do days, nights, weekends and high-volume shifts too. Nights and weekends are the toughest ones to staff, so we build a core crew for them and schedule relief for call-offs.

Can we hire a temporary worker who works out?

Yes. Temp-to-hire is designed for that exact purpose. The worker begins on assignment, then you hire them after seeing how they perform on your floor. We can discuss terms when providing our quote. If you prefer to hire permanent employees from the start, direct hire recruiting will fill your positions on your own payroll.

Who should we call for distribution center staffing in Michigan?

Call a staffing agency that scouts out your facility before it places anyone. RHO Hiring does that from its office in Southfield. It works mostly in Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties, but serves facilities all over Michigan. Call (248) 843-0000 to discuss your location.
