What does a general laborer do?

General labor positions load and unload trucks, break down pallets, carry material to the production line, sort and stage product, maintain clean work areas and assist wherever needed based on the volume of the day. These jobs are entry-level, but they can be demanding. General laborers stand and walk for a full shift, lift and carry, perform repetitive tasks with precision and keep pace with their team.

Facilities differ in how they use general laborers, so RHO Hiring begins by learning about yours: the duties, shifts, pace, safety equipment and actions of a quality worker during their first week on the job. We prescreen workers for dependability and attention to detail, we train them on safety protocols before they arrive on site and we communicate your site-specific expectations to them, from starting time and entrance used to the attire and shoes needed for the job. Most shifts are 8 to 10 hours long on first, second or third shift, with weekends and overtime during peak weeks.

Good general laborers are often your candidates for other jobs: packing, machine help or forklift driving after your facility trains and assesses them. That's why so many employers utilize temp-to-hire to retain top performers.

General labor staffing questions

Don’t see yours? Call 248-843-0000 and a manager will answer it.

Where can we find general laborers quickly in Michigan?

Through an agency that already has applicants coming in, as general labor is typically the fastest job to fill. You will be called back by RHO Hiring's manager (typically within a couple of hours) to review the order and provide you with an estimated start date based on head count needed for that shift.

How is general labor priced?

Hourly, based on a billing rate that pays for the worker's wages, the cost of employing them and RHO's recruiting and management. Shift, overtime, head count and duration of assignment affect the rate. You will be quoted a rate before any employees start.

What should we have ready on the first day?

A supervisor to meet with workers, a tour of the area, and your site safety rules, including any personal protective equipment we have agreed your site will supply. We advise workers ahead of time what they will need to bring and wear.

Who handles payroll for general laborers?

RHO. Workers on assignment to you are RHO employees. We pay them, withhold payroll taxes, and deal with the paperwork. Your staff approves their hours.

What if a laborer doesn't work out?

Inform your RHO manager. We will investigate and, if it isn't the right fit, terminate the assignment and send someone else.

Can general laborers move into other jobs at our site?

Yes, and many companies hire their future packers, line workers and operators this way. Some jobs, like driving a forklift, may require on-site training and evaluation first. If you choose to hire the worker permanently, they can transition to temp-to-hire or to your payroll as outlined in your agreement.
