What do cannabis facility workers do?

Tasks in a cannabis facility range from grow support (watering, transplanting, pruning, moving plants and cleaning rooms) to harvest, drying, hand or machine trimming, processing, weighing, packaging and labeling. Cannabis facilities are highly controlled environments: grow rooms with regulated humidity, strict sanitation checklists and guidelines, and meticulous processing and packaging procedures. Most job functions are repetitive and must be done to specific standards, and the quality of the finished product relies on doing the work with care.

Michigan marijuana businesses are licensed through the state's Cannabis Regulatory Agency, and operate according to its rules for licensees, which outline expectations around security, track and trace, record keeping, sanitation, etc. Each facility writes those rules into their own set of procedures. Your RHO employees follow your facility's procedures, and your team trains them on the specifics of your operation; prior to starting at your facility, RHO prepares employees for proper handling practices, facility rules and basic compliance expectations.

We design every placement around your operation, strain schedules, production volumes and processes. Trimming teams expand during harvests and contract during down times, grow ops staffing stays steady, and packaging teams ramp up prior to deliveries. Shifts typically run from 8 to 10 hours and are predominantly days, although we provide evening and weekend shifts when harvests or orders require it. RHO also has recurring staffing programs that align with your harvest cycles. Read our guide to staffing a Michigan cannabis facility for more on trim, grow and packaging teams.

Cannabis worker staffing questions

Don’t see yours? Call 248-843-0000 and a manager will answer it.

Do RHO workers follow our compliance procedures?

Yes. Michigan licensees are regulated by the rules of the Cannabis Regulatory Agency, and your SOPs implement those rules at your facility. RHO trains employees on best practices for handling and facility policies prior to them arriving at your location, and your staff trains them on procedures specific to your operation. You and your facility are ultimately responsible for your license and compliance.

Can you scale trim crews up and down with harvests?

Yes, that's exactly what recurring staffing plans are designed for. Tell us about your harvest schedule and we will work with you to plan crew sizes and start dates. Then, we tweak as each harvest arrives.

How is cannabis staffing priced?

Per hour worked at a billing rate that includes the cost of the worker's wages plus the expenses associated with employing that worker and RHO's recruitment and management costs. The type of job, shift worked, overtime premium, head count and duration of assignment are factors in determining the rate. You will receive a quote prior to any personnel beginning.

Who employs the workers?

RHO does, during the assignment. We pay the workers, withhold payroll taxes and process employment paperwork. Your staff manages the work and approves the hours.

What if a trimmer or cultivation worker doesn't work out?

Inform your RHO manager. We will investigate and if they aren't a good match we will terminate the assignment and place someone who is a better match with your rooms and your standards.

Can we hire workers permanently?

Yes. Workers have the option to transition to temp-to-hire or onto your payroll as outlined in your agreement with RHO. Successful trimmers who make it through a harvest are often the workers facilities desire to hire.
