First-shift tips for Metro Detroit job seekers
What we tell every employee before their first shift at a new location.
- Do a test run of the route before the first day, ideally at the same time of day as your shift.
- If you take the bus, please look at the SMART or DDOT schedule for the times your shift starts and stops, even on weekends.
- Allow plenty of time to arrive: 10 to 15 minutes early will give you time to locate parking, the entrance and your supervisor.
- Wear what they ask for on the site (like safety-toe boots) and leave the dangling jewelry at home.
- Dress for the facility. It can be freezing by the docks in the winter, and hot in the plants in the summer.
- Come prepared with water, and lunch if there is not a place to purchase food nearby.
- If you will be tardy or unable to attend your shift, contact RHO prior to your shift, not after it starts.
- Ask questions. Nobody expects you to know a new site on the first day.
