How do you staff a 3PL warehouse that serves many clients?

At a 3PL warehouse you staff one client account at a time. This is because you are operating several businesses out of one building. One client sends auto parts to assembly plants on a strict schedule. Another ships retail goods in cartons. A third just stores pallets that move about once per month. Each account has different systems, labels, service levels and sometimes even its own space in the building. Workers have to learn what rules apply where.

Detroit-area logistics firms work near the heart of the auto industry. Many handle parts and components that move between suppliers and assembly operations. Those jobs operate on just-in-time schedules: Parts arrive in the order needed and near the time the line requires them. A delayed shipment or mix-up can disrupt your customer's production. Workers serving those customers can't afford to miss counts, labels or sequence.

Volume follows the client list. A 3PL could win an account that requires a full staff within weeks. It could also lose an account and need to downsize while retaining top talent. We learn the workflow of each account, its shifts and volume, and staff to fit. We grow or shrink headcount as accounts are acquired, expanded or terminated. Read our warehouse staffing guide to learn how to plan for pickers, forklift operators and loaders by shift.

Many 3PLs have labor reporting up the chain to their own clients as well. RHO's workforce analytics reports hours, attendance and turnover by shift so you can plan and justify headcount.

What do 3PLs need from a staffing partner?

  • Different rules for every account

Workers transitioning between client areas must be aware of what scanning, labeling and handling rules apply to each area.

  • New accounts on short notice

Securing a contract may require staffing up a crew for a new customer within weeks of the award, before your first trucks even arrive.

  • Service levels you answer for

Clients track on-time shipping and accuracy rates, so a short-staffed shift will ding your numbers.

  • Headcount that follows the contract

Labor must expand for a rollout and shrink at the conclusion of a contract without being understaffed or overstaffed.

Logistics and 3PL staffing questions

Can you staff a new client account on short notice?

The sooner you let us know, the better (preferably when the contract is signed). We can plan headcount by shift with you and begin recruiting prior to the arrival of your first trucks. Normally a manager will respond to your request within a couple of hours.

Do your workers handle automotive parts for 3PL accounts?

Yes. Lots of Metro Detroit 3PLs transport parts for auto suppliers and assembly plants. We prepare workers for the labeling, sequencing and accuracy the work requires. We also supply automotive staffing for the parts plants at the other end of those shipments.

Can you give us labor numbers to share with our clients?

Yes, we can if it's within what our workforce analytics covers: hours, attendance and turnover by shift. Tell us what your clients request and we can discuss what we can report. The same information can help you plan headcount by account and report back to your clients.

What happens to the crew when a client account ends?

We scale down with you. If your other accounts require people, great workers can be shifted to those accounts so you retain employees that already know your building. Give us the end date as soon as possible and we will schedule the step-down by shift.

Who should a 3PL call for logistics staffing in Michigan?
