Metal fabrication staffing for Michigan steel and machine shops

RHO Hiring offers metal fabrication staffing to Michigan steel fabricators, processors and machine shops: machine operators, material handlers and laborers ready to tackle heavy materials, sharp edges, hot work and moving cranes. We also supply skilled labor to one of Michigan's largest steel distributors. Call (248) 843-0000 and expect a manager to return your call, usually within a couple of hours.

What is metal shop work like for a new hire?

Metal shop work is heavy, sharp and loud. A new hire had better respect the work starting on day one. Coils and plate are moved around by overhead crane, sheet is fed through shears, brakes and presses, bar stock goes through saws, and finished parts emerge from welding cells and machining centers with sharp edges and burrs. Michigan is home to many of these shops: steel processors, service centers, stampers, fabricators and machine shops. Many of them supply the auto industry.

Every good metal shop has a culture of safety. New employees have to earn their spot in that culture starting in their first hour. That means wearing whatever PPE the shop requires, which is often steel-toe boots, safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves and sleeves, and hearing protection; keeping clear of suspended loads and crane paths; never putting their hands into a machine; and not messing with lockout tags and locks. RHO makes sure workers know those rules before they start, as part of the safety training that every worker receives before beginning, and looks for people who take them seriously.

Skill levels are position-specific. Material handlers, saw helpers and general laborers can be trained on the job by showing them how to do it the right way. Press operators, brake operators, sawyers and CNC operators typically require experience and the shop will want to verify it before letting them work on a machine. We take the time to learn about each position before we place anyone in it.

Metal shops also face the boom and bust of the auto industry. Shops add overtime and extra shifts when a program ramps up, but tighten the belt when the program doesn't. RHO's temp and temp-to-hire staffing allows a shop to increase headcount when work arrives and retain the employees that are a good fit. Learn how to train new employees safely in our guide to hiring for a production floor.

What do metal shops need from new workers?

  • Respect for the shop's safety rules

PPE, crane paths, guarding and lockout tags are not negotiable. One careless worker endangers everyone around them.

  • Physical, repetitive work

Lifting, handling sharp heavy parts and standing at a machine all day wear out workers unprepared for these things.

  • Real machine experience

Certain jobs require operators who already know how to run a press, a brake or a saw. Padded experience is exposed within the first hour.

  • Work that follows the auto cycle

Programs accelerate and decelerate, and the shop headcount must rise and fall with them.

How RHO Hiring prepares workers for a metal shop

  • We learn the shop and its hazards

We inquire about your equipment, materials, PPE policies and required skills for each position before assigning someone.

  • Safety expectations set early

Workers know what's expected of them before they arrive on site: what the shop needs from them, whether it's PPE, crane paths, guarding or lockout tags, and why each item is important. Job-specific onboarding and training can begin prior to day one for skilled positions.

  • A management team that acts

If a worker isn't going to mesh with your shop safety culture, let us know. A dedicated RHO management team remains on the account to address issues quickly, and the owners personally communicate with you. Give us a call at (248) 843-0000 to discuss your positions.

Metal fabrication staffing questions

What PPE will your workers need in our shop?

They will require the PPE your shop needs. Let us know your policies when we open the account, such as steel-toe boots, safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves and hearing protection, and no one will show up for their first shift wondering what they should wear and what the shop supplies.

Can you supply experienced press or brake operators?

Yes. If a position requires experience, we place people who have it. Please list the equipment and components. Typically a shop will trial an operator on its own equipment anyway, so we gear day one towards that.

Do your temporary workers do lockout and tagout work?

No. Lockout work is performed by your own trained and authorized employees. Temp workers are prepared to identify lockout locks and tags, leave them alone and stay clear of equipment that has been locked out.

Can you staff overtime and weekend shifts?

Yes. This includes daytime, overnight and weekend hours and high-volume periods, including weekend overtime for when a program is building up speed. Just let us know how long the ramp-up will last and what shifts you need coverage for, and we'll build the crew and the back-fill around that need.

Who should a steel or fabrication shop call for skilled labor?

Find a staffing agency that learns about your equipment and your safety protocols prior to placing anyone. RHO Hiring already supplies skilled labor to one of Michigan's largest steel distributors. We offer free job training to our employees that includes how to work safely with heavy equipment. A manager will typically respond to your inquiry within a couple of hours.
